A disgruntled customer allegedly set fire to a cafe in Spain after he was told staff could not offer him mayonnaise on his sandwich.

The alleged arsonist left the cafe and walked to a nearby petrol station after reportedly being told "no" twice by members of staff.

While there, he bought a litre and a half of petrol before returning to set the cafe on fire and causing thousands of pounds of damage, according to local media reports.

Footage of the incident showed the man walking up to the cafe's counter and setting an object on fire with a lighter, sparking a ball of flames.

Other customers, who included young children and elderly people, were forced to run for cover.

About €7,000 worth of damage was done to the cafe

A 50-year-old man was arrested near the scene of the attack in the town of Los Palacios y Villafranca, south of Seville in Andalusia.

He is expected to appear in court on Friday.

Children and the elderly were made to evacuate from the cafe after flames erupted from the counter

Jose Antonio Caballero, the owner of Las Postas Cafe-Bar where the incident occurred, described it as "something surreal".

"First one waiter [said no] and then the second time this gentleman asked for mayonnaise, he was given the same answer, which was that the bar doesn't have a kitchen...and we don't have sauces," he told local media.

"At that moment, he walked to the garage opposite, returned to the bar with a bottle in his hand, which we discovered afterwards had petrol inside, and asked the first waiter: 'Are you sure there's no mayonnaise?' without giving him time to reply.

"There's no explanation for what happened. It was awful."

One waiter managed to grab a fire extinguisher but the damage is expected to cost the cafe up to €7,000, Mr Caballero said.

"The important thing is that nobody was injured. There were young children and elderly people around. Imagine if someone had been hurt," he added.

The suspect was reportedly taken to a local health centre for treatment for burns to one of his hands.
