<p>D'Angelo's family confirmed his death in a statement saying that they "are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind"</p>
<p>D'Angelo's musical legacy will live on through his children.</p>
<p>The soul legend, who was considered one of the pioneers of the neo-soul genre in the 1990s, was a father of three. He welcomed his first child, Michael Archer Jr., with the late R&B star, Angie Stone, who died in March 2025 following a tragic car accident. Following his split from Stone in the late 1990s, D'Angelo went on to welcome two more children: daughter Imani and son Morocco.</p>
<p>On Oct. 14, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that D'Angelo died at 51 years old following a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, saying that "he was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months."</p>
<p>Shortly after, his family released a statement to Variety, saying, "The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life."</p>
<p>"We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind," the statement read. "We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world."</p>

<p>D'Angelo became a father when he and Stone, who he dated in the 1990s, welcomed Michael Archer Jr. on Feb. 28, 1997, per his Instagram.</p>
<p>Michael, who has followed in his parents' footsteps as a musician, goes by the stage name Swayvo Twain. In a March 2025 Instagram post, he said he "used to try to separate" himself from his parents, given that he felt as though he was "fated to be in their shadows forever."</p>
<p>He added, "But thankfully, long before, momma left I learned to embrace them and their legacy full on."</p>
<p>Following the news of D'Angelo's death, a source told PEOPLE that Michael Jr. was by his father's side through his final days.</p>
<p>"His son was there with him and had been with him in the hospital," the source said, adding that Michael Jr. has "been through a lot in such a short time," referencing his mother's recent death.</p>

<p>Imani, D'Angelo's only daughter, shared with Bold Journey in November 2024 that she was born in Los Angeles but moved around the East Coast until she was a teenager. She added that she spent the longest time living in Kissimmee, Fla.</p>
<p>During a June 2024 interview with Shoutout LA, Imani, a fellow musician, shared that she has "always been into the arts," adding that she used to love "to draw and write books" until she was 7 years old.</p>
<p>"At that age I heard a Keshia Cole song on the radio and that was it for me," she added.</p>
<p>Imani shared that she knew at that point that she wanted to pursue music, and began "writing real songs" around 16 years old.</p>
<p>While she hasn't spoken much about her familial musical roots, she shared a sweet photo on her Instagram Stories following her dad's death that showed the father-daughter duo bonding over music, paired with three mended heart emojis.</p>
<p>In the photo, the later singer played guitar while Imani sat beside him with a smile on her face.</p>

<p>D'Angelo's third child and second son is named Morocco. He lives his life out of the spotlight, and D'Angelo had not shared many public details about his youngest child.</p>
