Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79. The iconic actress, known for her roles in films like Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, and The First Wives Club, was taken to the hospital by ambulance following some type of medical emergency at her home in California, according to TMZ.

Keaton's family has not shared any additional information about her sudden death and the cause isn't clear. Fans are now wondering what happened — if the actress' death was due to something sudden such as cardiac arrest, or if she'd been struggling with something that perhaps she chose not to share publicly.

Over the years, Keaton has been diagnosed with a few different things that have impacted her life, including a skin cancer diagnosis when she was just 21-years-old."It's a family history," she told the Los Angeles Times in 2015. "I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. It's tricky with this skin cancer. That's why you've got to put the sunblock on."

"Back in my 20s I didn't pay attention much," she continued. "I didn't research and didn't really care and that was stupid because it's dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn't start sun care until my 40s."

Per the outlet, Keaton had basal cell carcinoma in her 20s and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, more commonly found amongst people with fair skin, according to the Mayo Clinic, many years later. She underwent two surgeries to have the cancer removed.

Many fans are wondering how Keaton died, even some of those closest to her, who say that her health went downhill rapidly in recent months.

"I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin. She had lost so much weight," Keaton's friend Carole Bayer Sager told People magazine.

Fans have been leaving their condolences on Keaton's last Instagram post, which was uploaded in April.

"I am shocked and so sad! I can't believe she's gone," one person wrote.

"I'm devastated. My favorite of all time," someone else said.

Keaton is survived by her daughter, Dexter, and her son, Duke, both of whom she adopted when she was in her 50s.
