A man has been arrested after allegedly posting to social media that "any Ute fan I see is dead" at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

No. 23 Utah visits No. 15 BYU in the first game since 2009 with both the Utes and Cougars in the AP Top 25. Tuesday, Christopher Tai Justice was arrested after he was linked to an X account that tweeted threats towards Utah fans. After allegedly saying that any Ute fan he saw at the stadium would be dead, he also allegedly tweeted that "anyone wearing red on Saturday is getting shot."

From KUTV:

Investigators said they identified Justice as the person behind the account and took him into custody. Justice allegedly denied having a Twitter account when he was first confronted by investigators, according to court documents. When shown the posts, he reportedly told officers "they were horrible" and he "would never say anything like that."

Through the investigation, police reportedly found text messages between Justice and a friend saying he would deny the tweets if confronted by police. When he was asked about the texts and information linking his phone to the tweets, Justice allegedly admitted to making the threats online, saying he lied because he was "scared of what could happen."

Justice has been charged with two misdemeanors, including threat of violence and obstruction of justice. He's currently on probation after a second DUI arrest.

The game is the second meeting between the schools as members of the Big 12. Utah joined the conference ahead of the 2024 football season after the Pac-12 dissolved. BYU won last year's game 22-21 on a game-winning field goal after a controversial penalty. The call led Utah athletic director Mark Harlan to say after the game that the win had been "absolutely stolen from us."

The Holy War is a rivalry that dates back to before 1900 and is one of the fiercest in college sports. There's little love lost between the two schools. And that led to the presidents of both universities launching a "Rival Right" campaign this week, urging fans to "be respectful" and "be competitive" while also keeping it lighthearted.

That latter request may be difficult for some fans to fulfill. Fans threw objects onto the field at the end of last year's game, and this year's game has even more meaning in the Big 12 title race. BYU is 3-0 and in a three-way tie for first in the Big 12, while Utah is one of four teams tied in fourth at 2-1.
