A DeBary, Florida, man was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of his wife earlier this year, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Epifanio IX Ramos Gaminde was taken into custody after a grand jury returned an indictment for the murder of Maria Gaminde.
Maria Gaminde’s family reported her missing after losing confirmed contact with her in January 2024. Her husband told authorities that she had voluntarily moved out of their DeBary residence and was living overseas.
Investigators said suspicions mounted when text messages and additional communications sent under Maria’s name did not seem authentic. Detectives later uncovered evidence showing an orchestrated effort to make it appear as though she was still alive and avoiding contact with friends, relatives, and law enforcement.

The case expanded overseas, drawing in federal agencies along with international law enforcement partners in Japan and the Philippines. Investigators from the sheriff’s office and prosecutors with Florida’s 7th Judicial Circuit traveled to the Philippines to conduct witness interviews and collect physical evidence.
Maria Gaminde’s body has not been found.
Epifanio Gaminde is being held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail. In addition to the first-degree murder charge, federal officials placed an immigration detainer on him through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sheriff’s officials said they will release additional updates as the case proceeds through court.
