Marshall Manning’s time is coming: What Baylor coach sees in Peyton Manning’s son

Marshall Manning has dealt with an injury this season but has still received significant playing time at the midway point of his freshman season at Baylor.

Being the son of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, expectations were always going to be high for Marshall Manning the moment he stepped onto a varsity field.

Now midway through his freshman season at Baylor (Chattanooga, TN), Marshall has experienced his fair share of action while dealing with an injury that kept him out of action for a few weeks.

Even while he had to deal with that injury, Baylor head coach Erik Kimrey's plan for his quarterback of the future has gone almost exactly how he's wanted it to as Marshall has seen the field several times this year.

"With all of my backups throughout my years here at Baylor and when I was at Hammond (SC), you want to get them meaningful reps because you know their time is coming and his time is certainly coming," Kimrey said of Marshall during an interview with Will Levenson of WTVC NewsChannel 9 in Chattanooga. "He's unfortunately had to battle a couple of injuries this year that have limited him a little bit but he's shown a lot of what he can do in practice. I'm excited for the future.

“He's got a lot of potential and a lot of mobility. He works incredibly hard and he's certainly capable. You want to keep it in perspective that he's just a freshman right now and let him mature as all young men do."

Marshall made his debut for the Red Raiders in the program's season-opening game against then-nationally ranked Brentwood Academy (TN) on ESPN2. He completed his lone pass attempt in the game to rising junior athlete Antwaun 'Cornbread' Adams for a first down in the second quarter. Baylor would go on to win that game 38-20.

He would go on to miss a few weeks with a foot injury but returned to play the second half of Baylor's 45-17 win over Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) on Sept. 25.

A week later, he again came in during the second half as Baylor routed crosstown rival McCallie (TN) 49-7 in the most-lopsided victory in series history. Marshall relieved Baylor starting quarterback and Ole Miss four-star commit Keegan Croucher in the second half.

Marshall would lead the Red Raiders on their final scoring drive of the night and finished the game 3-of-4 passing for 35 yards.

This week Marshall once again should get a decent amount of playing time if the Red Raiders take care of business like many expect. Baylor, the No. 15 team in the Super 25 rankings and No. 7 team in the Southeast Super 15, host winless Legacy School of Sport Sciences (TX) Oct. 16 with kickoff coming 7 p.m. ET.
