WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Iran-linked hackers have threatened to disclose more emails stolen from U.S. President Donald Trump's circle, after distributing a prior batch to the media ahead of the 2024 U.S. election.

In online chats with Reuters on Sunday and Monday, the hackers, who go by the pseudonym Robert, said they had roughly 100 gigabytes of emails from the accounts of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Trump lawyer Lindsey Halligan, Trump adviser Roger Stone and porn star-turned-Trump antagonist Stormy Daniels.

Robert raised the possibility of selling the material but otherwise did not provide details of their plans. The hackers did not describe the content of the emails.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi described the intrusion as "an unconscionable cyber-attack."

The White House and the FBI responded with a statement from FBI Director Kash Patel, who said: "Anyone associated with any kind of breach of national security will be fully investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

"This so-called cyber 'attack' is nothing more than digital propaganda, and the targets are no coincidence. This is a calculated smear campaign meant to damage President Trump and discredit honorable public servants who serve our country with distinction," cyberdefense agency CISA said in a post on X.

Halligan, Stone and a representative for Daniels did not respond to requests for comment. Iran's mission to the United Nations did not return a message seeking comment. Tehran has in the past denied committing cyberespionage.

Robert materialized in the final months of the 2024 presidential campaign, when they claimed to have breached the email accounts of several Trump allies, including Wiles.

The hackers then distributed emails to journalists.

Reuters previously authenticated some of the leaked material, including an email that appeared to document a financial arrangement between Trump and lawyers representing former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - now Trump's health secretary.

Other material included Trump campaign communication about Republican office-seekers and discussion of settlement negotiations with Daniels.

Although the leaked documents did garner some coverage last year, they did not fundamentally alter the presidential race, which Trump won.

The U.S. Justice Department in a September 2024 indictment alleged that Iran's Revolutionary Guards ran the Robert hacking operation. In conversations with Reuters, the hackers declined to address the allegation.

After Trump's election, Robert told Reuters that no more leaks were planned. As recently as May, the hackers told Reuters, "I am retired, man." But the group resumed communication after this month's 12-day air war between Israel and Iran, which was capped by U.S. bombing of Iran's nuclear sites.

In messages this week, Robert said they were organizing a sale of stolen emails and wanted Reuters to "broadcast this matter."

American Enterprise Institute scholar Frederick Kagan, who has written about Iranian cyberespionage, said Tehran suffered serious damage in the conflict and its spies were likely trying to retaliate in ways that did not draw more U.S. or Israeli action.

"A default explanation is that everyone's been ordered to use all the asymmetric stuff that they can that's not likely to trigger a resumption of major Israeli/U.S. military activity," he said. "Leaking a bunch more emails is not likely to do that."

Despite worries that Tehran could unleash digital havoc, Iran's hackers took a low profile during the conflict. U.S. cyber officials warned on Monday that American companies and critical infrastructure operators might still be in Tehran's crosshairs.

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Dozens of militants armed with guns and rockets stormed a police station and set fire to two banks in restive southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing a boy and wounding nine others before fleeing, officials said.

The boy died when the attackers fired on civilians indiscriminately during the attacks in Mastung, a district in Balochistan province, said Jan Mohammad, a local government administrator.

Mohammad said some of the insurgents were also killed in the shootout with security forces.

A provincial government spokesman, Shahid Rind, said a security operation had been launched to pursue the assailants.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, though suspicion is likely to fall on the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA, which often targets security forces and civilians in Balochistan and elsewhere. The United States designated the BLA a terrorist organization in 2019.

Balochistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency by separatist groups seeking independence from the central government. The province is also home to militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban and the Islamic State group.

Republican hopefuls wait for Lara Trump decision in North Carolina Senate race, sources tell CNN

Lara Trump, President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, is the leading potential candidate to run for Senate from North Carolina with Donald Trump's backing, multiple sources tell CNN.

Sen. Thom Tillis' announcement that he won't seek reelection next year opens a prize opportunity for North Carolina Republicans. Multiple Trump allies looking to enter the race have begun reaching out to the president's aides, potentially seeking an endorsement that would all but lock out other challengers in a GOP primary.

But Lara Trump, the former Republican National Committee co-chair and a key campaign surrogate last year, has the right of first refusal on an endorsement by her father-in-law, those sources say. Should she decide not to run, Republicans aligned with Donald Trump plan to conduct a full assessment of candidate possibilities in a race Democrats will contest as a potential opportunity to cut into the GOP's majority.

"It would be great for her to run," one source who has spoken to the president about the prospect told CNN.

A source familiar with Lara Trump's thinking said she's been fielding calls from Republicans encouraging her to run and is considering it.

"There is a lot for her to factor into this decision, like losing time with her kids," the source said, noting that she had taken those factors into consideration when weighing running for Senate from North Carolina in 2022 and from Florida last year when then-Sen. Marco Rubio was nominated for secretary of state.

Lara Trump is a native of North Carolina and a graduate of North Carolina State University.

"There are a ton of conversations happening in every direction, but the reality is everything hinges on the decision Lara Trump makes," said Republican strategist and North Carolina native Doug Heye.

Some other potential candidates have already begun scheduling meetings in the meantime with the White House, including Rep. Pat Harrigan.

Michael Whatley, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, has also expressed interest privately about a potential Senate run, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

Whatley has a close relationship with the Trump administration and political machine after Trump endorsed the former North Carolina Republican Party Chairman to succeed Ronna McDaniel as Republican National Committee chair. Trump promoted Lara Trump for the role of co-chair of the RNC at the same time.

Reps. Richard Hudson and Brad Knott are also considered contenders for a Trump endorsement.

"If she declines, I was told the president will decide between Whatley, Harrigan and Knott," said one source who has closely worked with Republicans at all levels in North Carolina.

Heye noted that despite her roots in the state, Lara Trump would be running her first campaign in a state Democrats see as a prime pickup opportunity.

"We know she's good on TV, we know she can raise money. How will she be on the stump when she goes to New Bern? How aggressively will she be campaigning? We call them first-time candidates for a reason, because they are untested," added Heye.

However, Raleigh-based Republican consultant Jonathan Felts says he's seen Lara Trump's campaign chops up close.

"We looked at Lara early in 2022, in the race to replace (former Sen. Richard) Burr, and we've stayed in contact with her over the years," said Felts, who served as the senior adviser to the eventual GOP candidate and winner of that Senate seat, Ted Budd.

"I think people might be surprised," he said. "She genuinely connects with grassroots audiences. People here have home-state pride in her. She'll be a legitimate candidate if she decides to run."

South Korea's former president Yoon defies summons in martial law probe

June 30, 2025 at 7:00 PM

SEOUL (Reuters) -Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday risked another attempt at arresting him by skipping questioning by a special prosecutor investigating his December declaration of martial law, prompting the prosecutor to issue a new summons for Saturday.

Yoon said he did not go to Tuesday's appointment because he needed to prepare for a hearing later this week in an ongoing case.

After Yoon failed to appear, the special prosecutor ordered the former president to attend questioning on July 5.

Yoon was ousted in April by the Constitutional Court, which upheld his impeachment by parliament for a martial law bid that shocked a country that had prided itself on becoming a thriving democracy after overcoming military dictatorship in the 1980s.

Through his lawyers, Yoon, a powerful former top prosecutor elected president in 2022, has accused the special counsel of going on a politically-motivated "witch hunt," describing as illegal some of the tactics used against him.

Yoon's lawyers did not immediately comment on the new summons, but Yonhap news agency said Yoon was expected to attend with his lawyers asking prosecutors for a formal attendance request.

On Monday, Yoon's lawyers had said July 5 was the earliest he would be able to appear, citing a trial court hearing on insurrection charges set for Thursday that he must attend and his rights as a defendant to rest and prepare.

A spokesperson for the special prosecutor's team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Yoon has been locked in an unprecedented wrangle with authorities over the investigation by the special counsel appointed in June, which ratcheted up prior efforts by state prosecutors and police to investigate his martial law attempt.

During Yoon's first appearance on Saturday, questioning was interrupted for several hours after he objected to procedures he said violated his rights.

The special prosecutor's team said on Tuesday if Yoon did not appear for questioning on July 5, the court might grant an arrest warrant for Yoon, according to Yonhap.

Analysts and some members of Yoon's conservative People Power Party have questioned his intentions, since he was a lead prosecutor in the 2017 graft investigation and prosecution of former President Park Geun-hye.

Two other special prosecutors were appointed in June to sift accusations of wrongdoing by Yoon's wife and obstruction by the presidential office of an investigation into the death of a marine in 2023.

Man shot Idaho firefighters who had asked him to move his vehicle, killing 2, sheriff says

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A man who started a wildfire and then fatally shot two firefighters and wounded another in northern Idaho was a 20-year-old transient who attacked the first responders after they asked him to move his vehicle, a sheriff said Monday.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris offered new details about the Sunday confrontation at Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d'Alene, a popular recreation area. He said Wess Roley was living out of his vehicle, had once aspired to be a firefighter and had only a handful of minor contacts with area police.

"We have not been able to find a manifesto," the sheriff said, adding a motive was still unknown.

Norris said families of the victims are "in shock — absolutely. They're in shock and they're still processing it."

2 veteran firefighters are killed and a third is in critical condition

Battalion Chief Frank Harwood, 42, who had been with the county fire department for 17 years, was killed, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Christopher Way said during a news conference Monday. Harwood was married and had two children, and he also was a veteran of the Army National Guard.

Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison, 52, was also killed after working with the department for 28 years.

Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Fire Engineer David Tysdal, 47, sustained gunshot wounds and was in critical condition. Authorities said he had two successful surgeries.

After the shooting, local law enforcement agencies have offered to go on every call that the fire department goes on, according to Way.

"I don't know that we're ever going to be able to guarantee people's peace of mind, at least for a while after an incident like this," he said. "But we are taking every measure we can to ensure safety of our responders."

Roley had set a fire using flint, and the firefighters who rushed to the scene instead found themselves under fire. They took cover behind fire trucks.

"There was an interaction with the firefighters," Norris said. "It has something to do with his vehicle being parked where it was."

Roley had ties to California and Arizona before moving to Idaho

Roley later killed himself, the sheriff said.

He had ties to California and Arizona and was living in Idaho "for the better part of 2024," Norris said. "But as far as when he got here, why he was here, why he chose this place — I don't know."

Two helicopters converged on the area Sunday, armed with snipers ready to take out the suspect if needed, while the FBI used his cellphone data to track him and the sheriff ordered residents to shelter in place. They eventually found Roley dead in the mountains, his firearm beside him.

Roley lived with T.J. Franks Jr. for about six months in Sandpoint, Idaho, while working for a tree service, Franks said on Monday. Franks had cameras in his apartment that caught Roley throwing gang signs at them one day, which worried Franks to the point that he called police.

"I didn't know what to really think about it," Franks said. "I just called the cops and had them talk to him."

The landlord also called Franks one morning because neighbors reported that Roley's vehicle had been left running for about 12 hours. Franks said Roley was asleep in his room and said he forgot about the vehicle.

Franks said Roley "started acting a little weird" and at one point shaved his long hair off completely.

"We just kind of noticed him starting to decline or kind of go downhill," he said.

A swift outpouring of support

Outpouring of support for the victims was swift in Coeur d'Alene, a city of 55,000 residents near the border with Washington.

Hours after the shooting, people gathered along Interstate 90 holding American flags to pay their respects as the two fallen firefighters' bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office in Spokane, Washington, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Coeur d'Alene.

Gov. Brad Little ordered U.S. and Idaho state flags to be lowered to half-staff to honor the firefighters until the day after their memorial service.

"All our public safety officers, especially our firefighters, bravely confront danger on a daily basis but we have never seen a heinous act of violence like this on our firefighters before," he said in a statement. "This is not Idaho. This indescribable loss is felt deeply by all those in the firefighting community and beyond."

Though the shelter-in-place order was lifted, the sheriff's office cautioned residents to be prepared because the fire was still burning. The Idaho Department of Lands said it had burned about 26 acres (10.5 hectares).

Way described the fire on Monday as "reasonably contained," saying that respondents had "stopped significant forward progress."

Fire is always a concern for the region, said Bruce Deming, whose property abuts the trail system. When he noticed smoke on the ridge Sunday afternoon, he wondered why no firefighting helicopters were responding.

When a friend texted to tell him about the shooting, he realized why he wasn't seeing aircraft: "Because they're concerned about being shot at," he said.
